Two Responses. September 3
And, behold the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw him, they besought him that he would depart out of their coast. Mathew 8:34
And when the men of that place had knowledge of him, they sent out into all that country round about, and brought unto him all that were diseased; and besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole. Mathew 14:35-36
Here we have two totally different responses to Jesus. Those in the region of Gergesenes ask him to leave. Those in the region of Gennesaret gathered Everyone they could and brought them to Jesus and ask can we just touch your garment. In both cases he did what they asked. Amazing isn’t it one group ask him to leave, you might think he would get mad and say look I’m the son of God I’m not leaving. Your leaving and give them a zap of something like lightning. But no, he graciously grants there request and leaves. However, he did leave a man whom he had cast out a legion of demons and told him you go around these parts and tell what God has done for you. And he did. But oh the blessings they missed out on. Now on the other hand, look at the blessings of the group who honored him. Many were made perfectly whole. And think how blessed those who had went and gathered up people felt, having played a part in their blessing. The message is clear today. We can ask Jesus to come be with us each day thru our prayers and actions or we can say lord we don’t want you or need you around here, by lack of prayer and by actions contrary to him. I have a preacher friend who used to preach a message entitled “ one more night with the pigs”. The Gergesenes who had asked him to leave were probably upset over the loss of all those pigs which Jesus had sent that legion of demons into, which he had cast out of the new preacher in town. You would think they would have been excited about it. For they had tried unsuccessfully to tame this man. But they preferred one more night with the pigs, instead of the presence of Jesus. Let’s not be like them. Tell him this very day Lord I need you to be with me this day and every day.
